There are some movie characters we remember even if they only appear for a short time. Colin Creevey is definitely one of them. With his huge smile, endless enthusiasm and an old-fashioned camera always ready in his hands, the young Gryffindor quickly became one of the most memorable smaller characters in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

But there is an interesting twist to his story. Hugh Mitchell, the young actor who played Colin, eventually left acting behind and became a professional photographer himself. It sounds almost like something written for a film, but in this case, fiction and real life simply happened to meet.

The Boy Who Never Put His Camera Down

Colin Creevey arrives at Hogwarts as a first-year student and immediately becomes fascinated by Harry Potter. For Colin, Harry is not simply another pupil. He is a celebrity, a hero and someone Colin desperately wants to photograph.

His camera is almost part of his personality. He follows Harry through the corridors, asks for pictures and wants to record the magical world around him. There is something very innocent about Colin’s excitement. He comes from a Muggle family, so Hogwarts is completely new to him. Moving photographs, magic lessons and famous wizards are all discoveries worth capturing.

His love of photography even becomes part of one of the darker moments of Chamber of Secrets. Colin is attacked by the Basilisk, but he does not look directly into its eyes. Instead, he sees the creature through his camera, which means he is petrified rather than killed.

Although Colin continues to play a role in the Harry Potter books, Hugh Mitchell did not return as the character in the later films. His screen appearance as Colin therefore remains closely connected to the second movie and, above all, to that camera.

A Lucky Audition

Interestingly, acting was not originally a great ambition for Mitchell. He later recalled that he had taken part in a few school plays, but he was not especially interested in drama at the time.

Then something unusual appeared on a noticeboard at his school: a fax from Warner Bros. announcing auditions for the second Harry Potter film.

Mitchell decided to give it a try. After three rounds of auditions, he was chosen to play Colin Creevey. Suddenly, an ordinary schoolboy found himself inside one of the biggest film productions in the world.

Mitchell has described working on Harry Potter as exciting and frightening at the same time. Being on the sets, wearing a Hogwarts uniform and working with professional actors and crew members was an experience very different from anything he had known before.

The role also opened the door to a longer acting career. Mitchell continued acting for around fifteen years and appeared in films, television productions and theatre. But eventually another interest became more important.

Photography.

From Colin’s Camera to Hugh’s Camera

At first sight, it seems almost too perfect. The boy who played Hogwarts’ most enthusiastic young photographer grew up to become a photographer in real life.

However, Mitchell himself does not present it as a magical case of a movie role deciding his future. Photography had actually been part of his life from a young age. His father was interested in photography, and Mitchell won a Pentax film camera in a magazine competition when he was only ten.

Years later, his interest became more serious, especially through landscape photography. The combination of being outdoors, travelling and searching for the right light attracted him. A photography workshop in the Lake District became particularly important, as it helped him begin to imagine photography not only as a hobby, but as a possible career.

Eventually, he decided to move away from acting and work as a photographer full-time.

Today, Mitchell photographs portraits, weddings and events, while landscape photography remains especially important to him. His years as an actor have also helped him as a photographer. Having spent so much time in front of cameras, he understands what it feels like to be the person on the other side of the lens.

More Than a Harry Potter Coincidence

Of course, the connection with Colin Creevey is difficult to ignore. A young actor spends a film running around Hogwarts taking photographs, and years later he earns his living doing exactly that in the real world.

But Hugh Mitchell’s story is more interesting than the simple headline suggests.

He has spoken openly about being grateful for Harry Potter while also wanting to create something that belongs to him as an adult. He does not reject his connection with Colin, but he also does not want a role he played as a child to define everything he does afterwards. His photography has become a new creative career with its own identity.

And perhaps that makes the story even better.

Colin Creevey wanted to photograph everything because the magical world seemed extraordinary to him. Hugh Mitchell now works behind the camera for a very different reason: to find interesting people, beautiful light and memorable moments in the ordinary world around us.

No moving photographs. No Hogwarts corridors. No magical developing potion.

Just a camera, a photographer and the desire to capture something worth remembering.
